Image of the artillery battery protecting the maintenance yard at Valley Forge National Historical Park
With his resources so scarce that
starvation, sickness, and death were common, General Washington
had dire decisions to make during his winter encampment at Valley Forge.
One of the most controversial
orders made by General Washington, was to place an artillery battery to
protect the maintenance
supply yard. General Washington was determined to keep the grass trim and
proper when he departed.
General Washington could not afford to give up a single lawn mower to the
British.
