RE: Phone Conversation: Business Advisory Council
Mr. James Frizzell,
Per your request, attached is a memo from our Chairman Tom Davis regarding the NRCC's Business Advisory Council. We need you - and the common sense and record of achievement that has been lacking in Washington for far too long. After you review the information, please call Chris Patton at 1- 800-650 8375. He will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Re. The Role of Honorary Chairmen
We have a unique opportunity to forge a new and dynamic alliance between the Republican leadership and the small business community. The Business Advisory Council and our Chairmen are crucial to the success of that initiative. Honorary Chairmen are clearly the key, first step in this process. Your name, and your support, will be critical as we begin to enlist the achievers and entrepreneurs--and eventually, thousands of ordinary citizens.
Obviously. there is no obligation of future service; and it is hoped that as an Honorary Chairman you will welcome the opportunity to get further involved. Here are the areas in which you will be asked to help:
I look forward to working with you. Hopefully that covers everything. If you have any additional questions or comments, please call my assistant Chris Patton at 1-800-650-8375.
In the opinion of James E. Frizzell, the way in which he was contacted by the National Republican Congressional Committee, was a telemarketing scam. Also James E. Frizzell expressed disappointment in that the Republican Party would employ such tactics.

Dear Mr. Frizzell,
They left one of those National Leadership Award bits on my answering
machine at work today. I sensed right off that it must be a scam, so I
did some research on the web when I got home. That's how I found your
posting.
Is there such a thing as a National Leadership Award?
Anyway, it just gave me one more reason to be glad I'm a Democrat!

Just received the massage for a National Leadership Award given by Congressman Tom Davis and decided to look up on this before calling. There was nothing about it on Congressman Tom Davis's web site but the same message except the caller was a jean freeway. Definitely a wrong way to get money from the public.

Hi Jim:
Just writing to thank you for posting your experience with the "National Leadership Award." I got a similar voicemail today (April 9, 2002), assumed that it was a scam, and found your document immediately on the web. Creepy stuff, and now I don't have to bother to call them back.

Jim,
Thank you for placing 800-650-8375 on your web page so it comes up on search

My wife received a call at home from "Kyle Klorg" at that phone number. She
told me that I was nominated for an award and recognition by Congressman Tom
Davis.
Rather than returning the call, I decided to investigate the phone number on
the web. Thank you for exposing the scam!
This type of marketing by the Republicans is deceitful and should cease
immediately.
Thank you,

Hello Jim,
I just received a message much like yours but mine (allegedly)
came from Texas Congressman Tom DeLay's office informing me that I have won a
small business award. They need me to return their call to write my press
release. Could you tell me what this is all about? I am obviously very
skeptical. Thanks in advance.

Return their call and don't be surprised if your reward obligates you to a
campaign contribution.
Let me know how you make out?

I received a call today from Charles McCall on behalf of
Tom DeLay regarding my "National Business Award."
A quick "google" search found your posting. Although I am
a Republican, I am disgusted at this form of fund-raising
technique. I would hope that the Republican party has
enough confidence in their agenda that they do not need to
trick people into contributing money.
Thank you for posting your experience (as well as others')

I received a call reference the leadership award, called back, and received a
nice award, flag, picture of the president, and letter. I didn't donate any
money, though they did ask.
Since I joined, I have been asked to participate in a conference in Washington,
but at my own expense. I guess that as a small business person I do want my

so I went ahead and called back in.
Good luck to all...

I received a phone call on August 19, 2002, from a Dave Spring from
Congressman Tom DeLay's office purporting to give me a "National Leadership

I might have wasted my valuable time calling this number to receive an
earful of partisan political advertising. Personally, I choose to inform
myself politically through more debate-oriented news sources and when I do
give to political causes it is only after examining all sides of a
particular issue.

Received a call today on behalf of Tom Delay's office from a John Daniels stating that I was nominated for a National Leadership Award and that I should call them back at 1-800-650-8375 at my earliest convenience.
I am not a Republican and will never vote Republican.
When the name Tom Delay is mentioned all I can think about is how he paid travel and lodging for a swarm of his cronies to go down to Florida in November 2000 to harass civil workers that were recounting the votes. Appallingly corrupt and un-American if you ask me.

Had a little fun with this after I checked your web site. When I called Tom
DeLay's office, first they thought I was in NB instead of CO. Then she read she
speech well, "I'm sooo glad you called, Mr. Monson." After I listened to the
recorded retoric, I got on with the fund raiser. When I pointed out that I
worked for a city government, which is hardly a small business, it was, "I'm so
sorry. I don't know how your name got on the list. Please disregard the call. I
appologize." Click.
I was devestated! My national leadership award vanished with a click.
Keep up the good work Jim.

The two calls I have received (one in June and one today - September 18,

The one in June only wanted $200. The one today is non-specific but appears
to want more. The June one, they even faxed me some junk at my request,
"What the hell are you talking about?", but today all they would give me was
a web site address.

Dear Mr. Frizzell,
On Tuesday, November 19, 2002 at 12:30pm I received a telephone call from a Mona
Jean on behalf of Republican Tom DeLay. She stated that my Father (who was out
of town) had been elected for a National Leadership Award and that I should have
him call her back ASAP at 1-800-650-8375.
Being suspicious of ALL polititians, especially Republicans, I immediately had

catch. I searched the internet for the
telephone number listed above and found your website.
Thank you very much, Mr. Frizzel, for posting this information and your

I found your website after I accepted my award for the National Leadership

website have not done the research themselves. They just trusted what you
said. If they had called on their own they would have realized even though
they were asked they were not required to donate any contributions to any
campaign. If you want to give people all the information then you should
let them know that they can visit www.BusinessAdvisoryCouncil.org website.
This is not a scam. They do not try to trick you. They are very upfront.

was not a trickery by the Republican politicians.

Jim,
Thanks for the posting. This is from another "victim". If nothing else, it tells
people how prevalent the "scam" is. The reason I use the term "victim" and
"scam", is that these types of calls rob busy professionals of a precious
commodity: "time". When I received the call (from a "Valerie Wise" with
"Congressman Tom DeLay", my first reaction was to just delete it from my voice
mail. However, it irritated me that Republicans (whom I support) would stoop to
such low, bottom-feeding tactics. It bothered me to the point that I decided to
not send my usual year-end contribution to the Republicans this year. I do not
believe It is large enough for anyone to notice, but it is the principle that
matters.
Thanks again,
JL
(ps, I've sent a copy of the above to Congressman Tom DeLay as well. Maybe if
they get enough of them, they will stop this irritating and misleading practice.

straight forward, ethical manner)

From the party of virtue and "family values" came a new low in deceptive
telemarketing. I too got invited to be a "leader" by sending money to the
National Republican Committee (I always suspected that was one of the prime
qualifications for recognition in the GOP). But being one of those
"immoral" Democrats, I think I'll pass on buying my moral absolution and
just set back and wait for the Republican Congress and President to fix
everything that was ever wrong in this country (eliminate taxes, guarantee
social security and dismantle the environment - to name a few). I can't
wait to see what Republican ingenuity will find to replace the cry of
"gridlock".

Dear Jim,
When my daughter rushed into my upstairs office to inform me that I had won the
National Leadership Award, my initial response was, “Yeah, right. How much did
they ask for?” And that was without even knowing who had left the message.
Curmudgeons can never afford to drop the Shield of Cynicism.
My second response was to hit the Web, like any digitally-connected American.
Your site scored high on the search list. Alas, I watched my daughter’s hopes
for her dad’s glory fade as we read through your collection of e-mails. On the
other hand, my chuckles grew louder and louder as I read all the letters on your
site. It was a good time to reinforce the lesson with my offspring that “there

At least give the RNC credit – they’re trying an appeal to vanity, so it might
work well for them overall. Certainly other marketers make it work for them. But
I’ve got better things to do than to return the call.

"award" calls a few weeks ago; in fact, he called back numerous times to say
"I'm a democrat, take me off your list." Obviously the request was ignored; they
kept the phone number and just changed the name. It's funny how many of the
emails on this website are from democrats ... or maybe they're just more likely

Jim,
Myself and a very good friend of mine, both received a message on our phone
answering machines when we got home, from a Sam Morris, with a Congressman Tom
Delay. The message said we had both been selected to receive a National
Leadership Award. We live in Fairplay, Colorado or better known around the world
as South Park. I guess everyone who watches the cartoon 'South Park' on TV,
thinks we are really that stupid. When my friend called and told me what she
found on her answering machine, I checked mine and low and behold, I had the
very same message on my machine.
The first thing I did was to check out the National Leadership Award on the
internet and I found your website. Do all the parties represented in Congress
pull the same scams as this one by the Republican Party?
I made a copy of the e-mails you have received and gave them to my next door
neighbor, who is a reporter for our local newspaper, 'The Fairplay Flume'. I
also emailed a copy to another friend, who is a news producer for Channel 9
News, in Denver Colorado. I believe you may hear about this scam on national
news before to long. She said that after they investigate this, she bets the
networks will really eat it up. We are also contacting the other news stations
and I'm sure they will be contacting you in the near future. Both our messages
were the same a yours, except a differant caller's name and the congressman was
Tom Delay or Texas, enstead of Tom Davis.
We hope our contacts can blow this scam wide open. We are both, neither
republicans or democrats. We always vote for the man, not the party.

Hello Jim
I just wanted to thank you for posting the web site involving the so-called
"National Leadership Award". I am the general manager for a store within a large
retail company, and would not proclaim myself as either Democrat or Republican.
A representative of Tom Delane's office (Jame Marrott) left a message at my
place of employment letting me know that I was to receive this award, and to
return his call so that they may issue a press release. Immediately, my
co-worker and I researched the suspicious award via internet. That is when, of
course, I found your website. Just for humor, I then called the office to see
what James Marrott would have to say. I was apparently selected from a large
group of small business owners to receive this award (again, I work for a large
corporation) and was asked to attend a convention with fellow Republicans
(again, I am not Republican). Thank you again for posting the website in effort
to warn others about the Republican request for financial backing.

Being cautious about telemarketers, I searched the web for that number and it
directed me to this site. First off, I live in Arkansas, and Mr. DeLay
represents Texas. An obvious scam, and another annoying telemarketer to say the
least.
It is about time laws are passed to eliminate telemarketing altogether. They are
not wanted, and tie up needed business and personal phone services, not to
mention all the recent calls to cell phones. Why should the public be forced to
pay airtime for a telemarket call?

I received the "call" today about my National Leadership Award. First off I have a very small business as a second job so I knew that no one would be giving me an award but I called them back out of curiosity. Mitch Evans had called on behalf of Congressman Delay and wanted me to return the call before the press release was issued. They claimed to only want my help with no money out of pocket. Just needed me to fill out some surveys. I told them that I wouldn't mind helping them with some information and then came the pitch for $500. I told them my opinion was free but I would not give them any money. He said thanks and if I was still interested to go to www.businessadvisorycounsel.org and join thru there. My husband got a call from the same phone number and same old scam !!!
Since he was not around, his employees were so excited and I decided to do
some checking into this to see if it was real. By the way, Mr. Tom DeLay is
the congressman who's name was used this time.
It is apalling that they have resorted to the "rural" areas of our country
to try to raise money for the National Republican Committee - and from
Democrats.
I too will not be returning their call, in fact, I think I will send some
money to the Democratic National Committee just to ease my mind....that I
can do something for those who are desperately trying to hold this country
together.
Sincerely,
P Carter

Mr. Frizzell,
I suppose not even the Military is immune to this. I don't even own a
business anymore. My call came from a Justin Homer, who wanted to
recognize me for the National Leadership Award on behalf of Congressman Tom
DeLay and the National Republican Committee. Me, A National Leadership
Award? Yeah Right! So Instead of calling them back, I looked it up on the
net and found your website. Thanks for confirming what I had believed it
to be. Add me to your list, but please do not use my E-Mail.

I received my second call today, and this time decided to take the
call. As soon as the dude mispronounced my name I knew it was b.s. (well,
actually I knew that when they called 3 weeks ago and left a message about
Congressman DeLay wanting to give me an award). I played along a bit,
asking a few questions, none of which the poor fool was able or willing to
answer. I then told him that I happen to be a criminal defense lawyer who
specializing in representing people convicted and sentenced for various
federal crimes involving telephone and mail fraud (which is approximately
true, actually I represent people convicted of all sorts of federal
crimes), and suggested that he make note of my name and number, because he
would probably need it for future reference. At that point, he asked
whether I wanted to talk to a supervisor. I asked "supervisor of
what"? No answer. I then asked for a number at Congressman DeLay's office
in Washington to call to discuss his involvement in this business. At that
point the phone went dead. THen I went to Google to see what I could see,
and came upon your site, and others. Nice job. Now back to work, then home
to make dinner for the kids. -- Best wishes, Peter Goldberger, Ardmore, PA

Mr. James Frizzell
I received a call this morning from the NRCC advising me I was selected by
Chairman Thomas Reynolds to serve as an Honoree Chair on the Business Advisory
Counsel and I was also selected as his guest to attend a Black Tie diner with
President Bush in Washington D.C.
To make matters worse, I was advised to call the NRCC by a member of the local
Volunteer Ambulance Corp I have belong to for over 28 years and a past President
as they called this organization in an attempt to contact me.
When I called the 800 number they played a message from Chairman Reynolds and
when it was done they tried to hit me up for a donation of $500. When I said NO
they then tried for a smaller amount. Finally, when I would not commit to a
donation they gave me their web site of businessadvisorycounsel.org to check on
what they were doing. It was there I came across the many emails you received on
this very subject and felt you might be interested.
As a registered Republican I still resent their attempt to solicit money they
way they have and I felt this should be passed along to those individuals who
receive the same type of call.
Thanks
